TWO YEARS ON: Which startup is Europe’s next €100 million exit?

€100 million_exitTwo years ago, I wrote a piece for TechCrunch about which European startup was ‘cleared for the next €100+ million exit’ and picked out five European companies that I considered the most likely to do so.

A lot can happen in two years, but as can be seen from the summaries below, all five have ‘moved on’, pulled in more funding and taken their businesses to another level. These five predictions weren’t too far off the mark and I’m currently putting together another list of five companies that look as if they have huge potential. Any suggestions would be welcomed. Forget the knockers, there are some very real achievements at Silicon Roundabout

In Saturday’s Telegraph, blogger Damian Thompson tried to make a case that Silicon Roundabout is home to spoilt luvvies who churn out inconsequential iPhone apps, all the while whining about a lack of government handouts.

Is Thompson right, or is there something more substantial going on in London’s tech scene?

Stripped of the hyperbole, Thompson’s criticisms boil down to: the entrepreneurs of Silicon Roundabout are enthusiastic; they haven’t delivered anything of worth (but other parts of the UK have); UK tech entrepreneurs aren’t as aggressive as their Silicon Valley counterparts and spend all their time asking for government handouts instead of building businesses. 800 jobs up for grabs at Shoreditch’s Silicon Milkroundabout May weekend

More than 105 start-ups and established brands such as Google, Twitter, Facebook, Songkick and Mind Candy are joining 105 start-ups in London’s Shoreditch to offer 800 jobs to the brightest of UK talent.

They will get together over the weekend of May 26/27th 2012 where 3,000 potential applicants will be introduced to a number of companies dedicated to the areas of Product Management, User Experience (UX) Design, Visual Design, and Intelligence/Analytics. Continue reading
