Led by 4G, mobile data revenues will be $42 billion by 2018

mobile_dataA new report says operator revenues from mobile data roaming will be $42 billion by 2018, representing 47% of global mobile roaming revenue and up from an estimated 36% in 2013.

According to a white paper from Juniper Research, these revenues will be driven by increasing data usage, as operator migration and marketing towards 4G will offer faster broadband networks and reductions in roaming charges will spur heavier usage. Continue reading

It could have been oh so different, but there’s f*ck-all Olympic bunting in Paris

Yesterday I went to Paris to meet Maria Sharapova but it rained and rained so I stayed in the Orange hospitality tent and drank lots of champagne.

By the time I entrained the Eurorail back to Ashford (International is a joke btw) she had just started her match so she didn’t have the pleasure of meeting me. Shame, it could have been the highlight of her career.

Paris is a nice city, but as the taxi wended its way to Gare du Nord I noticed there wasn’t much bunting around… and there was certainly no Olympics signage around. Funny that. Continue reading

More sh*t (Sherlock?) means more wi-fi in Mexico City parks

This morning around dawn I took my dog for a walk. Great time of the day, head full of ideas, feet full of dew… and a sturdy plastic bag to pick up her pooh.

At no time during this walk did I think how her pooh could be used to increase wi-fi access… at NO time.

However, in ten Mexico City parks, it IS being used to boost bandwidth courtesy of a new scheme from web provider Terra.

The company has connected litter bins to digitally metered scales so that every time aforesaid pooh is deposited so more free wi-fi minutes are granted to people at the parks.

Whoever is the creative behind this idea is a genius. She or he should be hired by the greatest agency in the land. Gags fail me, puns escape me but next time I take my dog for a walk I’m going to think just a little bit harder.
